CRTC Unveils New Rules for Canadian Content!

The CRTC just dropped a brand new points system to define what counts as Canadian audiovisual content.

New creative roles like showrunners, heads of hair / makeup / costumes, VFX leads, and even virtual camera operators in animation now help a project qualify, and they must be real humans, not AI.

Shows can also score bonus points by featuring Canadian music, characters, locations, or by adapting a Canadian book.

Another big change: Instead of a fixed points threshold, productions now need 60%-80% of key creative roles filled by Canadians, depending on how much of the intellectual property is Canadian-owned. A minimum of 20% Canadian IP ownership is now required to qualify at all.

And stay tuned: a second CRTC decision is on the way, covering spending requirements, support for independent production, and protections for original French-language content. More updates coming soon!
